Volcano Views & Brews

Join us for Volcano Views & Brews lecture series with the Mt St Helens Institute!

This months topic: Caves of Fire and Ice: The Fumarole Glacier Caves of Mt St Helens

Presentation begins at 6:30 p.m. - Join us anytime after 5:00 p.m. for food and drink. $5 suggested donation.

The National Cave Rescue Commission and Mountain Rescue Association teams have joined forces to help scientists unlock the secrets in the growing fumarole glacier caves inside the active crater of Mt St Helens. Join us April 16 to learn about the exciting exploration and research this international team is doing under the fastest advancing glacier in the lower 48. Ice climbing robots, laser 3-D mapping, thermal imaging of sub-glacial fumaroles, and documentation of both visible and microscopic life is just part of the story. Getting there and surviving there is the other part, and just as exciting. Featuring the latest photos and maps of these awesome glacier cave phenomenon, and a video of the incredible team work it takes to conduct science in one of the most hostile and unstable landscapes in the world, this is a program you won't want to miss.

Eddy Cartaya has been a member of the National Speleological Society and exploring caves since 1988. He is currently the Pacific Northwest Regional coordinator of the National Cave Rescue Commission, and a member of Portland Mountain Rescue. He has been the project coordinator for the glacier cave studies on Mt. Hood, Mt St. Helens, and Mt Rainier since 2011, and leads an international team of scientists, and an integrated support team of cave and mountain rescuers to continue this integrated study under the ice of these active volcanoes. Eddy is a 1990 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point with a degree in Aerospace Engineering, and has been involved with cave survey and rescue since 1992. His day job is with the U.S. Forest Service doing law enforcement, SAR, EMS, and cave management. Eddy presents on cave science internationally and is the co-author of the upcoming cave rescue book Small Party Assisted Rescue.
